Surfing
Surfing is the town's major attraction. This
is what brought me there for the first time and one of the main reasons
I kept going back. Some
of the best surfers in Mexico live in Sayulita, so even if you don't surf
yourself you can watch the show.
There are three spots to surf right in town. The first is a right point that breaks over a rock bottom. It's a long wall, great for longboarding and shortboarding. There's a shoulder to this wave that breaks over sand - a good spot for beginners. A lot of lessons go on here. The right isn't the heaviest wave, but it's really fun, and when it gets big, its fast and powerful.
A little ways down the beach is a left. This wave breaks over a
rock reef as well and starts to show when the swell gets a little bigger. It's
not as long as the right, but when it's hitting this wave holds its shape
better and gets a bit heavier.
Right next to the left is a beach break. This spot starts to work at high tide and is better with a bigger swell. There are some good barrels to be had here. This is not a beginner's wave. There is a lot of current and the wave breaks hard. If you know what you're doing, it's really fun... if you don't its fun to watch.
There are also several world class waves in the area that are accessible
by car or by boat. Punta Mita is about 20 minutes south of Sayulita
towards Vallarta. There are a ton of reefs along the point - some
more well know than others. Depending on swell direction and size,
a surfer could choose from a mellow point, fast walls, or a big barrel. Surfers
can drive out to the point and hike, or hire a boat from Sayulita to take
them out to the reefs. My friend Diego's family runs trips and if
there's waves, they'll find them. These guys will also put on quite
a show for you in the water. You can ask for them on the beach or
stop by El Tigre restaurant.
There are also really good waves to the north of town. San Pancho
is about 15 minutes north and has a good beach break. Even
further north is Chacala - you have to take a boat to get there, but its
worth it. This is a heavy wave - a good barrel and when its on its
on. Diego can get you there too. San Blas and the wave known
as Stoners, is about a 45 minute drive north of town. This place
is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as having the longest wave
in the world. Its kind of fickle but when it gets good its unreal. You
can get there by car. These are just a few of the waves that are
out there - for anyone up to it, there's definitely exploring to be done. Again,
its all up to you.
Surf lessons are also available in town. Diego and the boys will
take care of you with lessons as well. You can find them under the
tent on the beach that says Tigre's Surf School. Anyone can learn
- go ahead and give it a try!!!!!!
